H.320 Standard

   A widely-used video compression standard that allows a wide variety of videoconferencing systems to communicate. Usually associated with ISDN.

 

H.323 Standard

   A rapidly growing video compression standard that allows videoconferencing systems to communicate over the internet using IP.

 

H.324 Standard

   A less popular standard that uses the regular POTS (plain old telephone service) to videoconference.

 

Headend

   Electronic control center - generally located at the antenna site of a CATV system - usually including antennas, preamplifiers, frequency converters, demodulators and other related equipment which amplify, filter and convert incoming broadcast TV signals to cable system channels.

 

High Definition TV

   Digital television broadcasting system with a significantly higher resolution than traditional formats (NTSC, SECAM, PAL).

 

Home Page

   A document with an address (URL) on the World Wide Web maintained by a person or organization which contains links to other pieces of information.

 

Host

   A network computer that can receive information from other computers.

 

Hybrid Course

   A course where, by design, any portion of the instructional time is provided through Distance Education in lieu of face-to-face interaction between the instructor and student. A course might have varying levels of hybridization ranging from having most of the contact hours occurring face-to-face to almost all of them being delivered completely at a distance.

 

Hybrid Satellite

   Satellite that carries two or more different communications payloads; i.e., C-band and Ku-band.

 

Hyperlink

   A hyperlink is a word, phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to a new document or a new section within the current document. Hyperlinks are found in nearly all Web pages, allowing users to click their way from page to page. Text hyperlinks are often blue and underlined, but don't have to be. When you move the cursor over a hyperlink, whether it is text or an image, the arrow should change to a small hand pointing at the link.

 

Hypertext

   A document which has been marked up to allow a user to select words or pictures within the document, click on them, and connect to further information.

 

Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML)

   The code used to create a home page and is used to access documents over the WWW.

 

Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)

   The protocol used to signify an Internet site is a WWW site, i.e. HTTP is a WWW address.
